Robert Tapscott was born about 1775 according to the 1841 census and his stated age at death. It is not known where he was born because his baptism record has not been found, but since he was married in Culmstock, Devon, it is assumed that at least his parents were from that village.

There were many Tapscott families living in Culmstock and the surrounding villages at the time but in common with other villages of the day, people were moving out to towns and cities in search of work as traditional cottage industries became more mechanised.  Perhaps he was born somewhere away from his parents' home parish and returned to marry.  He married Elizabeth Holway on 30th March, 1806 in Culmstock.

Robert and Elizabeth moved to Isle Brewers, Somerset, about 15 miles away, in about 1814. The first three children were born in Culmstock and the fourth in Isle Brewers yet all four were baptised in Isle Brewers on the same date, indicating a conscientious minister making sure all new parishioners had their children baptised.  According to the parish records in Isle Brewers, Robert was a dairyman.

Children of Robert Tapscott and Elizabeth Holway are:

Henry Tapscott, who was born about 1806 in Culmstock, Devon and died in 1868, in High Ham Somerset.
